Oparanya thrashes Waiguru to clinch CoG Chairmanship

Kakamega Governor Wycliffe Oparanya is the new Council of Governors Chairman.

Oparanya beat Anne Waiguru (Kirinyaga), Anyang’ Nyong’o (Kisumu), Salim Mvurya (Kwale) and Jackson Mandago (Uasin Gishu).

The election was held at Movenpick Hotel in Westlands, Nairobi, on Monday.

Oparanya takes over from Turkana governor Josphat Nanok.

Before being elected as chairman, Oparanya served as a member of the Finance and Economic Affairs Committee at the CoG.

Muranga governor Mwangi wa Iria was elected deputy chairman CoG.

Oparanya who is serving his second term is also eying the presidency in 2022. He is among close confidants of Mr Odinga in the western region.

He is the founding chairman of the Lake Region Economic Bloc which consists of the 14 counties in western Kenya.

Nanok was seeking re-election after expiry of his one-year term which began in December 2017. Oparanya is the fifth governor to be picked to head the council after Isaac Rutto (Bomet), Peter Munya (Meru), Salim Mvurya (Kwale) and Josphat Nanok (Turkana).
