Detectives in Mombasa have arrested a Tanzanian couple suspected of being behind a syndicate allegedly drugging bus passengers before stealing their valuables.

The suspects, identified as Pius Paskale Frugenze, 52, and his wife, Redempta Revelian Kuleta, 47, were arrested in Magongo following investigations into a robbery reported by a passenger travelling from Nairobi to Mombasa.

According to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), the latest incident occurred on September 18, 2026, when the passenger boarded a Dreamline bus in Nairobi.

The passenger allegedly became unconscious after the person seated next to him stupefied him during the journey.

He later regained consciousness at Tudor Sub-County Hospital, only to discover that his bag and other personal belongings were missing.

Detectives from Makupa Police Station launched investigations and followed forensic leads that eventually took them to the couple’s residence in Magongo.

A search of the house led to the recovery of the complainant’s HP laptop and iPhone 17 Pro Max, according to the DCI.

Detectives also recovered a collection of items suspected to have been stolen from other victims, including mobile phones, 20 phone chargers, 10 wristwatches, 20 wallets and assorted clothing.

Substances suspected to be stupefying drugs were also recovered during the operation.

The discoveries have raised suspicions that the couple could be linked to other similar incidents targeting passengers travelling along the Nairobi-Mombasa route.

The suspects remain in police custody as detectives continue processing the case ahead of their arraignment in court.

The recovered items have been detained as exhibits as investigations continue to establish their owners and determine the full extent of the alleged operation.
