Kilifi water crisis eases as power supply is restored

Water pumping in Kilifi has resumed after power supply was restored, with Governor Gideon Mung’aro saying residents should begin receiving water by midnight.

Mung’aro said the immediate water crisis had been resolved following discussions with President William Ruto over the challenges that had disrupted water supply in the county.

In a statement, the governor apologised to residents for the disruption, which he said had affected families, businesses, schools and health facilities.

“I sincerely apologise to the people of Kilifi for the water crisis and the hardship and inconvenience it has caused our families, businesses, schools and health facilities,” Mung’aro said.

He said the government was also addressing longstanding financial obligations to the Coast Water Works Development Agency and power tariffs, which have contributed to the challenges facing water supply.

“In the meantime, power supply has been restored and water pumping has resumed,” he said.

Mung’aro said the water system would need time to replenish before normal supply resumes.

“We expect water to start reaching our pipes by midnight today as the system is replenished,” he said.

The governor also promised improved communication whenever interruptions occur, saying residents would be informed promptly about any disruptions affecting water supply.

The latest development comes after residents across parts of Kilifi experienced water shortages, disrupting household activities and affecting businesses and public institutions.

Mung’aro thanked residents for their patience and resilience as efforts were made to restore the service.
