Mbaruku Vyakweli appointed GIWEH regional boss

The Global Institute for Water, Environment and Health GIWEH, a Swiss-based think tank on water and Sanitation, has announced the appointment of a Kenyan water sector veteran, Mbaruku Vyakweli, as its regional director for Eastern and Southern Africa.

The appointment was confirmed during GIWEH’s 64th General Assembly, held in July 2025, in Geneva, Switzerland.

He will serve a three-year term, representing GIWEH by advancing its mission of sustainable water and environmental management across Africa.

Speaking during the inaugural event, GIWEH President Didier Barthe and Director Dr Nidal Salim lauded Vyakweli’s long-standing contributions to Africa’s water sector.

“His appointment strengthens GIWEH’s commitment to empowering vulnerable communities with clean and affordable water. It marks as a milestone for Kenyan leadership in the global water sector.”

Vyakweli gained worldwide fame after being named one of the 51 most impactful Global Water Leaders in 2019.

He is expected to play a critical role in shaping Africa’s water future. Mr. Vyakweli’s record in policy and capacity building makes him the right person to lead our agenda in Eastern and southern Africa,” said Dr. Salim.

Vyakweli boasts over two decades of service in the water sector, having worked extensively on corporate affairs, governance and international partnerships,” he noted

Vyakweli expressed gratitude and promised to scale up GIWEH’s impact in Africa.

“Water is central to life, health and economic growth. My priority will be to foster partnerships that ensure communities, especially in vulnerable areas, have access to safe, affordable and sustainable water,” he said.
