Land and governance lobbyists in Mombasa County have warned Coast lawmakers to conclusively address the land question or risk being voted out in the 2027 general election.
Led by Haki Yetu Organization’s land and governance expert, John Paul Obonyo, the lobbyists accused most MPs of failing to prioritize land issues.
“2027 will be a year where every legislator will account for what they have done on land matters. We shall all stand for the slogan Kura Yangu, Shamba Langu” Obonyo said.
He urged the county government to operationalize the Ardhi Fund, noting that although anchored in law, no account has been opened and communities have yet to benefit.
Pastor Simon Wamalwa from Kisauni said local communities remain trapped by rogue landowners.
“We have been living like squatters in our own areas. The land is full of troubles day in and day out. Our MPs have failed us. MCAs have tried, but they lack the financial muscle to push the agenda,” he lamented.
Ali Juma from Timbwani Ward in Likoni echoed the concerns, saying residents have seen no benefits from the land they occupy.
“We are seeking government intervention. As it stands, we gain nothing from this land,” he said.
Mwanahawa Omar Tundo added that many families live on private land burdened with debts.
“We only came to discover later that the land we live on carries a huge debt,” she revealed.
