Transport Cabinet Secretary Davis Chirchir has called on a multifaceted approach amongst transport stakeholders in order to reduce road carnage.
Chirchir said road accidents have been claiming the lives of innocent Kenyans.
The CS further noted that over 4,000 lives are lost every year most of who are breadwinners in their families.
“These are Kenyans. They are breadwinners for ther families. We need all Kenyans who lose their lives for the economic stability of our country.” The CS noted.
Chirchir pointed out that the government is committed to ensure the safety of Kenyans on the roads.
The Transport CS indicated that the government is working on strict regulations that govern the road network
“As a government we are working on regulations and putting in the budgetary support required to reduce road accidents.”
He also noted that the government is working closely with other stakeholder’s including the police to ensure the safety of all road users
“Multiagency approach is our call. How do we work with the police department to ensure that Kenyans stay safe?” Chirchir said.
He was speaking at the sidelines of a transport conference that brought together various stakeholders in a Mombasa hotel on Thursday.
National Transport and Safety Authority NTSA Director General George Njau said the authority has been so strict on officers implicated with corruption allegations.
“This is a corruption free institution. We do not put up with such vices,” Njau said.
On his part, Transport Principal Secretary Mohamed Dagar said the government is working on eight key priority areas of action aimed at addressing road carnage.
Dagar noted that the ministry is also leveraging on the use of technology to avoid road carnage
“There are several regulations that we are working on as government. Further still technology is what we are now focusing on,” Dagar said.
Jomvu Member of Parliament and a member of the transport committee recommended for a Jukwaa la Usalama platform to address the ever increasing road accidents.
“I laud the CS for his commitment in addressing road carnage in this country. He has been at the fore front in ensuring that roads accidents are drastically reduced,” Badi noted.
Badi further urged the media to highlight all the positives that the government has been doing instead of concentrating on the negatives.
“It is your role as the media to sensitize Kenyans on the positivity of this government,” he said.
The vocal MP said the three day conference that brings together various stakeholders seeks to address some of the teething issue affecting Kenyans on the roads.
“Everyone should play his or her role. We are here to assist each other and avoid road accidents,” he noted
