Former Interior Cabinet Secretary Professor Kithure Kindiki has now assumed office as Kenya’s Deputy President, succeeding Rigathi Gachagua following his impeachment by the National Assembly and Senate.
President William Ruto nominated Kindiki as Deputy President on October 18, with Parliament subsequently confirming his nomination. Gachagua challenged his impeachment in court, initially obtaining conservatory orders halting Kindiki’s swearing-in. However, on October 31, a three-judge bench—comprising Justices Eric Ogola, Antony Mrima, and Freda Mugambi—lifted the orders, citing that leaving the Deputy President’s office vacant would disrupt government operations. “Issuing the conservatory orders sought would mean a de facto suspension of provisions of the Constitution,” Justice Mrima emphasized.
With the ruling, Kindiki officially became Kenya’s third Deputy President under the 2010 Constitution.
