Kilifi North MP Owen Baya has accused Non-governmental Organizations of inflating teen pregnancy statistics in Kilifi County to attract funding from donors.

Baya challenged NGOs to explain where they got the shocking statistics which indicated Kilifi recorded over 17000 cases of teen pregnancies in 2018.

He said that the figures were exaggerated for selfish gains.

The statistics put Kilifi north as the leading sub county with cases of teen pregnancies.

“We were told that Matsangoni had the highest number of teen pregnancies. I went to Kilodi primary where it was alleged there were 27 you girls who were pregnant. The head teacher said there were only 6 girls who were pregnant,” said the MP

He added: We know NGOs want to make money and forward proposals to receive donor funds but do not use Kilifi to enrich yourself,”

Mr Baya warned NGOs against using scientific sampling to come up with figures that are alarming but do not reflect the correct position on the ground.

The statistics released by the Kilifi county department of health indicated that by March, the county had recorded 22, 852 cases of teen pregnancies.

The department however was at pain to explain where these cases are.

Currently, a task force set by Kilifi governor Amason Kingi is getting views on the cause and possible remedy for the escalating cases of teen pregnancies.
