Two people have succumbed to injuries following a grisly road accident involving two Nissan matatus near Shaurimoyo along the Mombasa Malindi highway on Sunday evening.
The two, a woman and a student were rushed to coast referral hospital in critical condition.
They died on Monday morning while undergoing treatment.
According to police sources, the accident occurred after one of the drivers who was heading to Kilifi drove on the wrong side while avoiding to hit a cow which he allegedly saw crossing the road.
After the crash, the cow was nowhere within the accident scene.
They were rushed to Kilifi county hospital.
Kilifi north police commander Njoroge Ngigi said the two matatus had 29 passengers at the time of the accident.
“The Matatus collided head on. 22 out of the 29 passengers sustained serious injuries while seven had slight injuries. Out of the 29, 13 were students. Seven of the students are among those who sustained serious injuries while six sustained slight injuries. Four casualties were referred to the coast referral hospital,” said Ngigi
One of the deceased, Kibibi Abdulrahman was coming from a burial in Kilifi. She was travelling with her sister Fauzia who sustained a broken hand.
The students from different schools were travelling back to school after the midterm break.
