Two arrested with elephant trophies in Mwingi 1

Security officers in Mwingi Sub-County have arrested two people in connection with the illegal possession of elephant tusks.

The suspects, Mwendwa Ngura Ngavu, 63, and Serah Norah Mwendwa, 56, were apprehended following a coordinated operation by police officers and Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) officials in Kavuvwani village, Mwingi Central Sub-County.

Acting on credible intelligence, the joint team raided the suspects’ home, where a thorough search led to the discovery of three pieces of elephant tusks hidden within the residence. The tusks were immediately seized and are being held as exhibits.

The suspects are currently in custody at Mwingi Police Station, awaiting arraignment in court.

Possession and trafficking of wildlife trophies is a serious offense under the Wildlife Conservation and Management Act, which provides for heavy penalties, including imprisonment and hefty fines.

The arrest adds to a growing list of crackdowns targeting poachers and wildlife traffickers across the country, as Kenya continues to strengthen its resolve to protect endangered species, particularly elephants and rhinos.

Authorities have urged the public to report any suspicious activity related to wildlife crime, emphasizing that community cooperation is key in the fight against poaching.
