Ten sustain injuries in Mombasa road accident

Ten people have sustained injuries after a 33 seater minibus they were travelling in was involved in an accident along the Nairobi – Mombasa highway in Machakos.

Confirming the accident, Athi River South Subcounty police commander Jos Mudavadi said the accident occured at Bee petrol station area in Athi River on Thursday night.

It was reported at Athi River police station as self involved slight injury road accident incident on Thursday.

“It occurred on December 21, 2023 at about 8.00pm along the Nairobi – Mombasa highway involving a motor vehicle registration number KBB 359M of Mitsubishi make belonging to SEMA sacco,” said Mudavadi.

“The driver of the vehicle Kazee Muinde, lost control of the car after its brakes failed. It veered off to the right as one faces Mombasa general direction,” Mudavadi said.

The SCPC said the vehicle landed on its right side. The vehicle had 27 passengers aboard during the accident.

“Ten passengers sustained slight injuries, three were rushed to hospital and they were admitted at Shalom Community Hospital in Athi River,” Mudavadi said.

The police boss said the rest of the passengers were treated and discharged.

The vehicle was towed to Athi River police station awaiting inspection.

Police have launched investigations into the incident.

The accident happened hours after another vehicle, minibus belonging to the same sacco overturned in Maanzoni Lodge area along the highway on Thursday.

Several people were injured in the incident and were rushed to Machakos Level 5 hospital for treatment.
