The Senate speaker Amason Kingi has confirmed that a special sitting to hear charges against impeached Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua will be convened today.

In a Special gazette, Kingi said the siting will commence at 9.30 am.

The notice comes just hours after the Clerk of the National Assembly notified the Clerk of the Senate that MPs had approved the impeachment motion.

Also, it will be decided during the sitting whether the case will be heard, either through a Committee or the plenary.

“Under Article 145 (3) (a) of the Constitution and Standing Order 78 (1) of the Senate Standing Orders, I appoint the sitting of the Senate on Wednesday, October 9, 2024 at 9.30 a.m. as the sitting convened to hear the charges in the matter of the proposed removal from office, by impeachment, of His Excellency Rigathi Gachagua, E.G.H., Deputy President of the Republic of Kenya,” read the gazette notice.

Gachagua was impeached on Tuesday night after 281 MPs voted in favour of his removal from office.

MPs who voted to save Gachagua were 44 while one absconded.

The threshold set by the constitution is at least 233 MPs.
