Embattled journalist Salim Swaleh, who until recently served as the Director of Press in the office of Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi, has made an emotional appeal for a second chance following allegations of his involvement in a Ksh 5.8 million fraud scheme.
In a recently surfaced video, Swaleh, visibly distraught, is seen pleading for forgiveness and an opportunity to redeem himself, both in the eyes of the public and the political leadership he served.
Swaleh’s public downfall began in June 2024, when he was arrested alongside several other suspects in connection with fraudulent activities.
The arrest, which took place at the Kenya Railways building, came after a tip-off led authorities to discover counterfeit nameplates and other materials allegedly used in the impersonation of government officials.
The suspects, including Swaleh, were accused of orchestrating a scheme to defraud unsuspecting victims by posing as high-ranking government officials.
The charges against Swaleh, a respected journalist before his appointment in Mudavadi’s office, include abuse of office and involvement in a fraudulent conspiracy.

His arrest marked a significant scandal, not only due to the amount of money involved but also because of his close ties to Mudavadi, whose office has since distanced itself from the controversy.
As the legal proceedings continue, Swaleh’s defense team, led by prominent lawyer Danstan Omari, has presented new evidence that they hope will lead to a reassessment of the charges by the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).
Omari has argued that Swaleh was not a key player in the fraudulent activities, insisting that his involvement was minimal and not premeditated.
The defense maintains that Swaleh was drawn into the scheme unknowingly and has since cooperated fully with the investigation.
In his recent plea, Swaleh expressed deep regret for the actions that led to his arrest, emphasizing his desire to clear his name and restore his reputation. He also sought to mend his strained relationship with Prime CS Musalia Mudavadi, acknowledging the trust he had betrayed in this high-profile case.
The incident has drawn significant public attention, given Swaleh’s previously untarnished record in the media industry and his relatively recent transition to a high-profile government role.
His plea for leniency comes at a time when public trust in government institutions is already fragile, and the outcome of his case is likely to set a precedent for how such matters are handled in the future.
As the DPP reevaluates the case, many will be watching closely to see whether Swaleh’s appeal for a second chance will be granted, and what impact this case will have on his future, both personally and professionally.
For now, the embattled journalist remains at the center of one of Kenya’s most talked-about scandals, with his fate hanging in the balance as the legal process unfolds.
