Safaricom CEO Bob Collymore is dead.

Collymore passed away at his Nairobi home on Monday morning.

The Guyanese-born British businessman died at the age of 61.

A statement from Safaricom PLC chairman Nicholas Nganga indicated that Collymore died after a long battle with cancer.

“In October 2017, Collymore went to the UK to receive treatment for Acute Myeloid Leukemia and returned in July 2018 to resume duties. He has been undergoing treatment for this condition since then in different hospitals and most recently at Aga Khan University Hospital in Nairobi,” read part of the statement.

The statement further stated that his condition worsened in recent weeks.

Collymore leaves behind a wife and four children.

President Uhuru Kenyatta through the statehouse Facebook page eulogized Collymore as a distinguished corporate leader.

“It is with deep sadness that I have this morning received news of the death of Safaricom CEO Mr Bob Collymore after years of battling cancer. As a country, we’ve lost a distinguished corporate leader whose contribution to our national wellbeing will be missed.” ~ President Uhuru Kenyatta
