Robert Prevost elected as Pope, takes the name Pope Leo XIV 1

Cardinal Robert Prevost has been elected the new leader of the Roman Catholic Church, adopting the papal name Pope Leo XIV. He succeeds Pope Francis, who passed away on April 21, 2025, following a prolonged illness.

Who is Pope Leo XIV?

A total of 133 cardinals under the age of 80 gathered in the conclave to choose the next pontiff.

Originally from the southern suburbs of Chicago, Pope Leo XIV is widely regarded as a leader with strong pastoral and administrative capabilities. His appointment two years ago by Pope Francis to lead the Vatican’s Dicastery for Bishops placed him at the forefront of global episcopal appointments, highlighting the trust he had earned within the Church’s hierarchy.

His journey in the clergy has been notably international. After being ordained in 1982, he earned a doctorate in canon law from the Pontifical College of St. Thomas Aquinas in Rome. He later spent two decades in Peru as a missionary, eventually becoming the Bishop of Chiclayo from 2015 to 2023. During his time in Peru, he acquired citizenship and gained a reputation for being deeply involved in the life of the local Church.

However, his tenure in Peru was not without controversy, as he faced criticism over alleged mishandling of sexual abuse allegations—claims that were firmly denied by his diocese.

In addition to his work in South America, Pope Leo XIV also led the Pontifical Commission for Latin America, reflecting his deep ties to the region. Though American by birth, he is often seen as a bridge between North and South America, appreciated for his ability to connect diverse cultures within the Church.

At 69 years old, he is relatively young for the papacy, which may bring both opportunities for long-term leadership and scrutiny over experience. Nevertheless, his reputation as a reformer and his international experience have positioned him as a unifying figure for a Church facing complex global challenges.
