Reprieve for Aisha Jumwa as DPP withdraws Sh19m graft charges

The Director of Public Prosecutions has this morning withdrawn the Sh19 million graft charges against former Malindi MP Aisha Jumwa.

Jumwa is the nominee for the Public Service and Gender docket.

Before her appointment, Jumwa was facing a murder charge and a Sh19 million graft case.

The Public Service and Gender Cabinet nominee was officially charged in court with the two cases.

She was accused of allegedly embezzlement CDF funds.

She was among the unveiled 22 Cabinet nominees that Ruto hopes will help him implement the Kenya Kwanza agenda.

The Constitution requires that they must all be vetted by the National Assembly before they are allowed to assume office as part of the requirements to enforce ethics and integrity.

However, some of the President’s nominees face charges, including murder, rape and corruption.

And some MPs have vowed to be thorough in the vetting exercise of the cabinet nominees.

The MPs have criticized a number of those cabinet nominees while raising questions about their eligibility to hold CS positions.

The ethics watchdog, on the other hand, promised to hand Parliament integrity dossiers on Cabinet nominees, signalling an explosive vetting of Ruto’s picks.

The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission on Tuesday said it was compiling reports on the suitability of each of the nominees to block those with questionable integrity.

The EACC spoke as the Opposition piled pressure on the anti-graft agencies and Parliament to stay true to their mandate.
