Rabai residents in Kilifi county were on Tuesday morning treated to a rare incident after the body of a woman buried three months ago vanished from the grave.
Daniel Tsonachiro, husband of the woman said he was notified by neighbours that the grave of her wife was open and the coffin and body were missing.
“We buried my wife Fatuma Mwero on February 27 but on Monday night unknown people exhumed the body and went with it. We do not know the motive but we suspect a land dispute we have with a Mombasa tycoon,” said Tsonachiro.
Rabai sub-county police commander Fred Abuga confirmed the incident.

Abuga said a neighbour who claims to own the land obtained a court order to bar the family from burying the woman on the disputed piece of land.
“The family went ahead and buried the woman forcing the neighbour to return to court. We have since not received any orders from the court,” said Abuga
He appealed to residents to notify the police once they find the body.
“We are investigating the matter so that we can get those behind the incident and their motive,” added Abuga.
Tsonachiro said the court order was to restrain the disputed parties from making any development on the piece of land.
“This land belonged to a white settler who left after independence. We applied through the court to be allocated the land and the heirs who are living in UK permitted us to own the land. The tycoon forged a number from another area to claim ownership of the land,” he said.
The family has been living on the land since 1960.
