A Pwani University lecturer was on Sunday found dead in a rented house in Kwa Karimiko area in Kilifi town.

The lifeless body of the don was discovered after neighbors alerted the chief of a foul smell and flies that were coming from his house.

He was identified as Dr. Thomson Wazome, French language lecturer in the department of linguistics.

Students eulogized him as The most free [sic] lecturer where his student could rise his hand, request to sing a song and was granted

Fatuma Said, a neighbour said the foul smell has been there for the last two days but never thought it was a decomposing body.

“We thought it was either a dog or a cat that had died. We even tried to find around if we could get a dead animal but today morning we saw flies all over the windows of the house and we called the village elder but he was unavailable,” Said said.

“We called the chief and we broke the padlock of the main gate. The door to the house was open. The body was lying on the floor in his bedroom without clothes.”

According to Said, Wazome could have died three or four days ago.

His body was already decomposing.

Kilifi North Sub county Police Commander Kenneth Maina confirmed the incident.

“There is indeed a lecturer who was found dead. The matter was reported by a neighbour and the police visited the scene. The cause of death has not been established because he was living alone. We are waiting for the autopsy.,” he said.

Another lecturer described the deceased as a quiet person.

“He was a person who kept everything to himself. If you meet him he will just greet you and go his way. No stories,” the lecturer said.

The deceased was living alone in the house.

Neighbours also described him as a person without company.

“We only see him when he comes in or goes out. He mostly uses boda boda so he has no time for stories with the neighbours. We have not seen any other person go in his house,” Janet Muoki, a neighbour said.

Wazome, 60 joined Pwani University in 2014 from Karatina University where he also taught French on part time basis.

He was also a principal lecturer 2 at Kagumo Teachers’ Training college, Nyeri.

He worked as a teacher at Shimo La Tewa School, Mombasa, Kenyatta High School – Mwatate, and Mwafuga High School, Taita.
