The Media Council of Kenya has launched a new model platform for content management and monetisation for press clubs across the country.

The platform, accessible at (www.pressclub.or.ke), offers press clubs essential tools and resources to manage content more efficiently while enabling sustainable revenue streams.

It also addresses key challenges such as content distribution, audience engagement, and monetization in the ever-evolving media environment.

Speaking at the launch event in Machakos County, MCK CEO Mr. David Omwoyo emphasized the Council’s commitment to empowering journalists, promoting press freedom, and fostering professionalism within the media industry. The establishment of press clubs, he noted, is a strategic initiative aimed at helping journalists adapt to the shifting media landscape, particularly in light of the rise of entrepreneurial journalism.

“The media landscape in Kenya, and globally, is changing rapidly. As a response, we are supporting the creation of press clubs across Kenya to assist journalists in aligning with this shift, especially with the emergence of entrepreneurial journalism,” Mr. Omwoyo said.

He highlighted that press clubs are intended to serve as critical hubs for collaboration, networking, professional development, and digital content creation. Journalists will also be able to engage in entrepreneurial journalism and other innovative practices.

“Over time, press clubs in Kenya have evolved, taking on a more professional focus. Our goal is to strengthen this development by encouraging journalists to come together, share experiences, enhance skills, and advocate for higher levels of professionalism. Such efforts will contribute to a robust and independent media sector that upholds democratic values and serves the public interest,” he added.

The newly established press clubs are designed to foster a dynamic community of journalists while enhancing the sector’s viability through the monetization of digital content and other entrepreneurial ventures.

This approach, Mr. Omwoyo explained, will ultimately lead to a more vibrant and financially sustainable media industry in Kenya.

To date, the Media Council of Kenya has supported the creation of 15 press clubs across the country, including in Meru, Kisumu, Siaya, Kisii, Kericho, Nandi, Elgeyo Marakwet, Nyeri, Kilifi, Mombasa, Busia, Kwale, Mt. Elgon, Kitale, and Marsabit counties.

With these efforts, the MCK aims to ensure that journalists across Kenya have the tools, platforms, and professional support they need to thrive in a rapidly evolving media landscape.
