President Ruto meets former Meru Governor Kiraitu Murungi amid claims of regional exclusion

President William Ruto on Monday held discussions with former Meru Governor Kiraitu Murungi at State House, Nairobi.

The meeting came just days after Kiraitu raised concerns about the perceived exclusion of the Meru region from key government appointments.

Photos shared by the Presidential Communication Service showed the two leaders engaged in talks, which are believed to have focused on Kiraitu’s grievances regarding representation.

Last month, Kiraitu publicly expressed dissatisfaction with the Kenya Kwanza administration, accusing it of sidelining the Meru community despite its significant contribution to the coalition’s electoral victory.

He noted that Meru ranks fifth among Kenya’s largest ethnic communities by population but has been overlooked in recent government appointments.

“Our problem is, how come Meru suddenly disappeared from Kenya’s political map? We are number five in providing a multitude of votes for any government,” Kiraitu said in a statement in December.

The veteran politician lamented that the Meru community did not receive any top positions, including Cabinet or ambassadorial appointments, in the current administration.

“If it was not about a Cabinet position, how come we did not get even an ambassador appointment in this government? Our people are miserable,” he remarked.

Kiraitu emphasized that Meru residents, who played a crucial role in securing Kenya Kwanza’s victory, feel unappreciated and excluded.

“Meru people want to be treated equally with other regions. We have a right to be in this country just like others,” he said.

The former minister urged the government to recognize the community’s numbers and contributions, calling for fair representation to address their grievances.

It remains unclear what resolutions were made during the meeting, but the talks signal a potential step towards addressing the concerns of the Meru region within President Ruto’s administration.
