Police in Kwale County have netted bhang worth Sh200, 000 at Magandia area, Matuga sub-county.
They seized a sack weighing 40Kgs and over 200 rolls of the drug.
According to Matuga Ocpd Joel Chesire, the bhang was seized on Tuesday night at a roadblock after two people who were ferrying it on a motorbike abandoned it and escaped.
“The suspects were intercepted by police who flagged them down but they did not stop. This made the officers go after them. They left the luggage and the motorbike,” he said.
He stated that it is not the first time such an incident is happening in the area saying that suspects have been ferrying bhang from neighbouring counties to Kwale.
“The bhang has been coming from Mariakani, Kilifi County but we are vigilant as we are yet to identify the exact place where it is usually taken as well as apprehend the people behind the illegal business,” he claimed.
Chesire said that police have launched investigations into the matter to establish who are the peddlers and the destination of the bhang.
“The bodaboda was coming from Mombasa to Kwale County, we have launched a search for the suspects since we have the motorcycle as a lead,” he said.
Chesire asked for cooperation from members of public saying there is no doubt that the bhang is also consumed by school children.
“Locals should help us with information on drug traffickers so that we can put a stop to this bad practice, police alone won’t be enough,” he said
