The National Women Steering committee Mombasa Chapter has recommended for the dissolution of parliament on claims of a failure to play its oversight role.

According to NWSC, politicians are forcing their will onto Kenyans with the Building Bridges Initiative instead of concentrating on issues of public interests.

Speaking to the in Mombasa, Elizabeth Kadzo claims parliament has failed to implement the two-thirds gender rule as stipulated in the 2010 constitution.

“We are concerned at the lack of focus by the country’s entire political leadership on critical issues facing Kenyans today with the continued breakdown in social services,” said Kadzo.

At the same time, Joyce Dama said it is ironic for the government to talk about raising revenue from 15 to 35 percent.

She notes that the government has failed to implement mega projects and therefore the 35 percent revenue share is just but a dream.

“Our priority as a country as we speak is the coronavirus pandemic and not BBI. We cannot talk about BBI now. Implementing the projects is now a challenge,” she noted.

Ms. Dama explained that there is a need to enhance transparency and accountability of public funds instead of increasing the same amount without transparency.

She also took issue with the way the government is handling the lands question in the Coast region.

According to her, the only way to address the land question is by implementing the previous land commission reports.

“What are is the government doing to address the challenge of expired leases- those leases are now given to the hands of foreigners”

At the same time, Lucy Jelagat echoed the same statement on the dissolution of parliament.

She argues that it is the only way to bring about efficient use of public funds.

“Dissolution of parliament is not a rare occurrence as parliaments have been dissolved elsewhere for failure to represent the sovereign will of the people allowing them to elect responsive leaders,” she noted.

Lilian Muthike wondered how the government is addressing the challenge of corruption.
