The famous Notre-Dame cathedral in Paris is on fire.

The fire whose cause is yet to be established broke out on Monday afternoon and has spread rapidly across the building.

Officials suspect the fire could have been caused by ongoing renovations at the cathedral.

A major operation to contain the fire is underway with US President Donald Trump suggesting the use of flying water tanks to put off the fire.

“So horrible to watch the massive fire at Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris. Perhaps flying water tankers could be used to put it out. Must act quickly,” tweeted Trump

The Notre-Dame cathedral, which is visited by millions of people every year, is undergoing renovations after cracks began to appear in the stone, sparking fears the structure could become unstable.

French President Emmanuel Macron has cancelled his planned speech to the nation in light of the fire, which has engulfed the giant spire of the cathedral, an Élysée Palace official said.
