In a significant advancement in the fight against gender-based violence (GBV) in Kenya, the Accelerate National Shelter Program has been officially launched in Kilifi County.

This initiative is spearheaded by the Gender Violence Recovery Centre (GVRC) in collaboration with key partners, including the County Government of Kilifi, the Embassy of Denmark in Kenya, Population Services Kenya (PS Kenya), Population Services International (PSI), and Nairobi Women’s Hospital.

The program aims to provide a safe haven and essential support services for women and girls who have experienced GBV.

Kilifi County, like many other regions in Kenya, has been facing alarming rates of GBV, with statistics indicating that 45% of women aged 15-49 have suffered from physical or sexual violence.

Contributing factors such as cultural norms, poverty, and the lack of available shelter services have intensified the problem, making this new facility a crucial resource for the community.

Nairobi and Kisumu are also experiencing serious GBV challenges, underscoring the nationwide significance of this program.

During the launch event, Kilifi County officials reaffirmed their dedication to combating GBV.

Hon. Florence Mbetsa stated, “Kilifi County recognizes the severe impact of gender-based violence on our community, and we are taking decisive steps to change this reality. This shelter is not merely a response; it represents a commitment—a commitment to safety, healing, and a future free from violence for our women and girls. It serves as a beacon of hope, dignity, and protection. Together with our partners and the community, we will tirelessly work to create a safer, more just Kilifi.”

The Kilifi shelter is part of a broader national initiative to establish 13 similar facilities across Kenya, each offering safe housing, medical care, counselling, legal support, and skills training to empower survivors and help them rebuild their lives.

It is anticipated that the Kilifi shelter will assist over 500 women and girls annually in a region where GBV remains a critical issue.

Henrik Larsen, Head of Cooperation and Team Leader in Governance and Health at the Embassy of Denmark, emphasized the importance of collaboration in fostering lasting change.

“This shelter is not just a refuge; it is a significant step towards advancing gender equality and human rights in Kenya. By joining forces, we can help disrupt the cycle of violence and empower survivors to reclaim their lives.”

Alberta Wambua, Executive Director of GVRC, added, “Today, as we inaugurate the National Shelter Program in Kilifi County, we reaffirm our commitment to providing safe havens for those affected by gender-based violence. These shelters are not merely buildings; they are sanctuaries of hope, healing, and empowerment. Together, we will break the cycle of violence and create a future where every woman and child can live without fear.”

Dr. Margaret Njenga, CEO of PS Kenya, highlighted the program’s critical role in addressing the gaps in GBV management, stating, “We are actively re-establishing shelters across various counties, a commitment made during a ‘Human Rights’ Café. These facilities will not only offer safety and support to survivors but will also ensure access to care and justice, impacting 12% of the GBV burden in Kenya.”

As we take this essential step in the fight against GBV, we urge all stakeholders—including government agencies, civil society organizations, the private sector, and the public—to support this initiative. Whether through advocacy, donations, or volunteering, every contribution counts. Together, we can create a safer Kenya where survivors are protected and empowered to rebuild their lives. Let’s work collaboratively to turn this vision into reality.
