A man was Monday afternoon arraigned in a Mombasa court for allegedly publishing false information that Kilifi Governor Gideon Mung’aro had been swindled Sh200 million by a woman.

Jimmy Mureithi appeared before Mombasa Senior Resident Magistrate David Odhiambo, where he was charged with the publication of false information contrary to Section 23 of the Computer Misuse and Cybercrime Act of 2018.

According to the charges, Mureithi had through his official Facebook account, ‘Mureithi Wa Lucy’, alleged that Loise Makena swindled the current Kilifi governor the Sh200 million.

Mureithi pleaded not guilty to the charge.

The Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions, led by senior counsel Barbara Sombo, opposed the release of the accused person on bail terms.

The police sought more days to continue investigating Mureithi.

The investigations will include an analysis of two phones recovered from the suspect.

In his ruling, Senior Resident Magistrate Odhiambo directed that the blogger be remanded for two days at Central Police Station, Mombasa.

“This will allow the police to conclude their probe,” he said.

He directed that Mureithi be produced in court on Thursday, April 11, where he would be released on a Sh500,000 bond.
