The Kwale County government has launched an ambitious program to distribute over 5000 seedlings to farmers this season.
On Thursday, Kwale County Government Chief of Staff Rodgers Chimega officiated the distribution of seedlings to farmers in Mwereni and Dzombo wards, Lunga Lunga Sub County.
Chimega said the program is ongoing in all the 20 wards of Kwale County.
“This program is aimed at economically empowering farmers and also ensuring that the County is food secure. Make sure you take care of these seedlings,” said Chimega.
Farmers in Mwereni ward received 500 cashew nut seedlings and are expected to get over 1,500 mango and banana seedlings from next week.
In Dzombo ward, the Chief of Staff issued 500 cashew nut seedlings, 850 orange seedlings and farmers are also expected to receive more seedlings from next week.

The seedlings distribution program comes at a time when Kwale County has received good amount of rainfall this week.
152 farmers from Tsimba/Golini and 238 from Mkongani wards in Matuga Sub County also benefited from the seedlings distribution program. The exercise in the two wards was officiated by County Director of Early Childhood Development Education Abdallah Bilashaka.
Each of the farmers received between 5 and 10 seedlings comprising of banana, cashew nut and orange seedlings.
They are also expected to receive coconut and mango seedlings in the coming weeks.
Other County officials who accompanied Mr Bilashaka were the County Director of Agriculture Mr Hamisi Mwalonya, and Monitoring and Evaluation Director Mr Francis Ndiege.
