An Italian woman died after the car she was travelling in was involved in an accident
Wilhemia Beleli and her husband Mario Grappi were in the company of Rev. Father Benard Mwambungu Malasi of Gongoni Catholic Parish when they had an accident near Kensalt Company Limited along Malindi-Lamu Highway at 5 o’clock in the evening.
Confirming the incident Magarini OCPD Gerald Barasa said the car had a tyre burst and lost control.
“Father Mwambungu and the two occupants were driving from Malindi general direction towards Marereni and on reaching Kensalt Company, the vehicle had a rear tyre burst and as a result he lost control of the vehicle,rolled and landed in a ditch. The occupants received serious injuries and were rushed to Malindi Sub county hospital where Wilhemia was pronounced dead on arrival. Mario Grappi received some injuries on his right leg and arm and is admitted in a stable condition,” said Barasa
He added: Father Mwambungu sustained head injuries and is admitted at Tawfiq Hospital in a stable condition.
Barasa said the car was burnt beyond recognition.
The OCPD said the elderly couples in their 70s were in the Country with their children but children they left the parents and flew back to Italy.
“The couples are family friends to the Father (Mwambungu) and they are Catholics and they are regular visitors and I have personally known them because they have been here three times,” said Barasa.
The body of the deceased is at Star Mortuary awaiting post-mortem before it is flown to Italy on Saturday for burial.
