Former Kilifi deputy governor Kenneth Mwakombo Kamto has been shot dead. Kamto, who served as Governor Amason Kingi’s deputy in his first term was killed by unknown people at his Nyali residence on Tuesday night.

Mombasa county commissioner Evans Achoki confirmed the killing and said no arrest has been made.

According to his  wife Fauzia Kamto, three gunmen forced their way into the residence and ordered lights to be put on. “They had guns and slashers. They stole six thousand shillings, my phone and other personal belongings,” the wife said.

The motive of the shooting is yet to be established

His elder sister Chiku Kamto said this was the third attempt gunmen were pursuing his brother.

“He knew very well that he was being pursued by unknown people,”  Chiku said.

The news of his death shocked many in Kilifi due to his leadership style. During his tenure as the Kilifi deputy governor, Kamto made friends and enemies in equal measure.

Kamto had a fallout with Kingi when he publicly declared to run against his boss in the 2017 general election.

He however, shelved his ambitions and opted to deputize Gideon Mung’aro who ran on a Jubilee ticket and lost to Kingi
