As Kenya grapples with the relentless onslaught of heavy rainfall, devastating floods continue to wreak havoc across the nation. Government sources report that the situation remains critical, with no respite in sight as meteorological forecasts predict further downpours in various regions.

In a press release issued by the Government Spokesman, Isaac Mwaura on Sunday, alarming statistics shed light on the extent of the crisis.

The heavy rainfall, particularly affecting areas such as the Lake Victoria basin, Rift Valley, Nairobi, and South-Eastern lowlands, has led to widespread flooding, displacement, and loss of lives.

The report indicates that the rainfall is expected to persist, worsening flooding in several regions, including the Tana Delta, Homa Bay, Kisumu, and Nairobi. The overflow of dams and water reservoirs compounds the situation, posing significant risks to communities residing near high-risk areas.

Furthermore, the looming threat of Tropical Cyclone “Hidaya” intensifies concerns along the Kenyan coast, with anticipated heavy rainfall and strong winds predicted to worsen the crisis from May 5th to May 7th, 2024.

The toll on human lives and livelihoods continues to rise tragically. As of the latest update, 228 lives have been lost, with many more reported missing or injured. The displacement count stands at a staggering 212,630 individuals across 42,526 households, painting a grim picture of the scale of displacement and human suffering.

In response to the escalating crisis, the government has initiated emergency measures, including evacuation notices issued to high-risk areas, logistical support, and the provision of essential supplies to affected communities. Multi-agency teams are leading evacuation efforts, with a focus on safeguarding vulnerable populations and mitigating further risks.

Notably, Nairobi County has seen significant progress in evacuation efforts, with over 163,000 residents relocated from riparian areas to safer accommodations.

The government emphasizes its commitment to preventing future settlements in flood-prone zones and ensuring the safety and well-being of all citizens.

Amidst the flood emergency, concerns about waterborne diseases loom large. The Ministry of Health is collaborating with multi-agency teams to control the spread of cholera and other waterborne illnesses, emphasizing the importance of proper hygiene practices and access to clean water sources.

Despite the challenges posed by the floods, Kenya’s national parks and reserves remain largely accessible and safe for visitors. Authorities assure the public that measures are in place to ensure the safety of tourists and employees, urging travelers to disregard any travel advisories suggesting otherwise.
