Family appeals for help to offset hospital bill

A family in Kibokoni, Kilifi is appealing for help to clear a hospital bill at Kenyatta University Teaching, Refferal and Research Hospital to enable the hospital to release the body of their kin who died three weeks ago.

Sulubu Mangi, an uncle to the deceased said Matilda Sophia, 25 had been admitted at the hospital for over three months.

Her body was detained by Kenyatta University Teaching, Refferal and Research Hospital until the family clears the Ksh 377, 567 hospital bill.

At the time of death, the hospital bill was Ksh 693, 566 however; the National Hospital Insurance fund paid Ksh 316, 000.

Sophia lost her battle with oesophageal cancer.

“For the last three years, Sophia has been in and out of Hospital. We have tried our best but we have now hit a snag. Early this year she was admitted to the same hospital and we sold all livestock we had and a piece of land.  We are very destitute and we cannot bring our daughter home because of the hospital bill. We appeal to anyone who can help us to clear the bill to come to our aid,” he said

The late Sophia is a total orphan and a mother of two children aged five and three years.

She separated from her husband.

“We have been conducting fundraisers at home for the last three weeks but we have collected very little amount. The pain of losing our kin is heavy on us. It is even immense that we cannot bring her home to give her a decent send-off,” he said

Kitsao Kambi, an uncle to the deceased said the hospital had given them a two weeks ultimatum to clear the bill so that the mortuary cost can be waived.

“The two weeks have elapsed and we have not been able to raise the money. This means the bill will accumulate even higher. We are worried we may not be able to get the body of our relative,” he said

Kambi is appealing for the government to waive them the hospital bill so that the body can be released.
