Emmanuel Nzai to go for Kilifi governorship

Thirdway Alliance Kenya Presidential candidate running mate in the 2017 elections Emmanuel Nzai is eyeing the Kilifi gubernatorial seat in 2022.

Nzai is currently the Chief Executive Officer, Jumuiya Ya Kaunti za Pwani.

Last week posters with his portrait circulated on social media.

Nzai confirmed to the star that he will vie for the seat but did not reveal the party he will use.

Currently, he is in talks with the Chonyi council of elders and professionals from the county.

According to the posters, Nzai will vie on the newly formed Pamoja African Alliance (PAA).

PAA is associated with Kilifi governor Amason Kingi. Kingi and Nzai are allies.

Nzai who comes from the Chonyi subtribe of the Mijikenda is seeking to end the dominance of the Giriama subtribe who are the majority in Kilifi county.

The Chonyi Council Elders Chaired by former Kenya National Union of Teachers KNUT Kilifi branch secretary Mwalimu Rasi ( Also chair of the Mijikenda) have over the last several months been consulting on who will take over from Amason Kingi.

The council of elders resolved to invite names of suitable leaders to be considered and vetted for endorsement to contest the Kilifi county gubernatorial seat.

“We held a meeting as elders in Chonyi with all 26 Chonyi clans represented. We invited Kilifi South MP Ken Chonga but he declined and has chosen to defend his seat. We encouraged Stewart Madzayo but has also decided to defend his Senate seat. We also invited Engineer Dzombo Mbaru who has offered himself to contest,” Said Rasi

Another candidate, Michael Tinga failed to present himself for consideration.

When he presented himself before the council, Nzai committed to forming an exploratory committee of Kilifi Professionals to engage the council of elders and advise on the viability of his candidacy.

The Chonyi council of elders is seeking to draw consensus for a Governor, Deputy Governor, Senator, Women Rep and Speaker from the elders of Giriama, Rabai, Kauma, Jibana, Kambe, and Ribe.

A major contention is the popular sentiments that Governor Kingi of the Giriama community (North) have held the Governorship for 10 years with Rabai Deputising ( Saburi – 2017 – 2022 and Kamto – 2013 – 2017) and Kahindi a Southern Giriama (Kaloleni) as Speaker.

Senator Stewart  Madzayo who partnered with Governor Kingi to make a Giriama – Chonyi ticket and 10 years partnership is unpopular in the Chonyi community and facing a significant challenge from his protege George Kithi.

Emmanuel holds an MBA, Information Technology and Public Administration from Shenandoah University, Winchester, Virginia, USA.

He was the Executive Officer of the Vision 2030 Delivery Secretariat where he coordinated operations of the secretariat, flagship project implementations and reports to Vision 2030 Delivery Board and National Economic and Social Council and public.
