Vihiga County Secretary and Head of Public Service, Ezekiel Ayiego, has passed away
Ezekiel Ayiego, 57 passed away at his residence in Wamuluma ward last night.
The news of his demise was confirmed by Governor Dr. Wilber Ottichilo in a statement seen by Jumuiya News.
“It is with deep sadness that I have learned of the passing of Mr. Ezekiel Marley Ayiego, who was serving as the County Secretary and Head of County Public Service in the Vihiga County Government at the time of his death,” said Governor Ottichilo. He described Ayiego as a committed administrator, educator, and change advocate, who was highly efficient in his role and implemented significant reforms in the county public service.
Ayiego was highly regarded within the Vihiga County government and among the local community. His tenure of four years was marked by his dedication to improving public service delivery and fostering a culture of accountability and transparency. Ayiego was seen as the right-hand man to Governor Ottichilo, playing a pivotal role in the county’s administration and development initiatives.
A post-mortem is set to be conducted on his body to establish the cause of death. The Council of Governors (CoG) has since sent a message of condolences to Governor Wilbur Ottichilo, family, friends, relatives, and community members of Vihiga County.
“It is with deep sadness we have learnt of the untimely demise of Ezekiel Ayiego, County Secretary and Head of Public Service, Vihiga County,” CoG chair Ahmed Abdullahi said in a statement. “With heavy hearts, we extend our deepest and heartfelt condolences to the family, relatives, friends, and the people of Vihiga.”
Abdullahi said the CoG will remember Ayiego as a great administrator, a passionate educator, and a committed public servant who was an agent of change. “His contributions to the County Secretaries Forum will forever be cherished,” he said. “On behalf of the Council of Governors and the 47 County Governments, please accept our earnest thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.”
Makadara MP George Aladwa expressed his shock at the sudden death of the Vihiga County Secretary.
“The county has lost a dedicated, hardworking, and committed leader and servant. I condole with the family and Governor Ottichilo,” he said.
The chairman of the Kenya Secondary Schools Heads Association (KSSHA), Indimuli Kahi, said Ayiego was a renowned teacher of high repute with a rich management history in the teaching fraternity.
“Before he was appointed the Vihiga County Secretary, he served as the KESSHA assistant national organizing secretary, a role he served with a lot of commitment and diligence,” Indimuli added.
