L’Orchestre Veve band leader and famous saxophonist Georges Kiamuangana Mateta aka Verkys is no more.

The Congolese music maestro died on Thursday, October 13, 2022, after a long illness.

New blow for the Congolese musical world. The great saxophonist Verckys Kiamuangana Mateta, who is the pride of Congolese music, died at the Kinshasa Medical Center aged 78.

The Congolese media shared the news of his demise after confirmation from relatives.

Born on May 19, 1944, Georges Kiamwangana Mateta was primarily a saxophonist, composer, bandleader, record producer and music entrepreneur in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

Although recognized as a talented and prolific musician of all time, he was even more notable as “the first indigenous African to own a record label” and for introducing many major Congolese artists to the world through his recording studio and his Veve label.

He was a member of the rumba group TPOK Jazz, led by François Luambo Makiadi, which dominated the Congolese music scene from the 1950s to the 1980s.

He later formed L’Orchestre Veve.

His death on Thursday plunged Congolese showbiz into extreme affliction.
