A church service attended by former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua was temporarily disrupted on Sunday, April 6, 2025, after a group of unidentified youths stormed the venue.
The incident took place at PCEA Mwiki Church in Kasarani Constituency, Nairobi, shortly after Gachagua and his entourage arrived for the service.
Eyewitnesses reported that chaos broke out as hundreds of youths forced their way into the church, prompting security officers attached to the former Deputy President to fire gunshots into the air to disperse the crowd.
Reports indicate that the unruly group was allegedly demanding cash payments to attend the event. Dressed in military-style fatigues and combat gear, the youth raised alarm among congregants, some of whom were forced to flee for safety.
During the scuffle, several chairs inside the church were broken, and a vehicle belonging to Gachagua was stoned, with its windows shattered—an incident captured in videos and images circulating online.

The situation forced organizers to temporarily halt the service, as tensions ran high both inside and outside the church.
Notably, there was no visible presence of the National Police Service (NPS) during or after the incident, leaving Gachagua’s personal security team to manage the fracas.
Despite the chaos, Gachagua remained calm and seated on the main dais as the confrontation unfolded. He is expected to address the congregation later, with speculation mounting that he may use the opportunity to respond to President William Ruto’s recent tour of the Mt. Kenya region.
The presiding bishop of the church strongly condemned the disruption, calling it a violation of the right to worship.
“We have freedom of worship in Kenya, and the Constitution guarantees that anyone can visit any part of the country,” the bishop stated.
This marks the second time in recent weeks that an event involving the former Deputy President has been disrupted. On March 23, he was briefly blocked from leaving the ACK Cathedral in Nyeri Town by another group of agitated youths.
An unconfirmed number of people were reportedly injured during the Kasarani incident.
