By-elections can go on amid Covid-19, CS Kagwe says

The containment measures currently in force in the country due to the Covid-19 pandemic should not prevent the conducting of by-elections in the country, Health CS Mutahi Kagwe has said.

The CS on Thursday said the electoral body, IEBC, should device ways to conduct the by-elections when the appropriate time comes.

“Right now, Kenyans are much more concerned with saving lives than voting,” he said.

He spoke at the Coast General Teaching and Referral Hospital in Mombasa after touring Mombasa healthcare facilities to assess the county’s level of preparedness in fighting Covid-19.

“Electronic voting may be adopted,” said Kagwe.

He however said the electoral body is the right authority to determine that.

In Kilifi County, Dabaso ward residents are preparing for a by-election after the nullification of the win of the immediate former MCA Emmanuel Kitsao. Msambweni residents are also preparing for a by-election after their MP Suleiman Dori died on March 9.
