Teenage girls in Kilifi county have been asked to visit health facilities in a bid to understand the changes they undergo during adolescence.

According to Lucy Nyawira a clinical medicine and surgery student, most young girls fail to visit health facilities during this period for fear of what she terms as the unknown.

Nyawira, a peer educator at Safe Community Youth Initiative, says reproductive health is a basic right among young girls, adding that it is offered free of charge.

“Reproductive health is your right. I ask all teenage girls to visit health facilities so that they can understand the body changes,” said Nyawira.

She spoke to the media in Kilifi county.

She,  however, cited technology and tradition as some of the challenges facing teenage girls within Kilifi county.

Safe Community Youth Initiative Director Benjamin Katana lashed out at the county government on what he claims is being dormant on the Costed Implementation Plan on family planning.

According to him, the county has only allocated 4 million for the implementation of the 2019-2020 CIPFP from the projected allocation of 22.1 million.

“We are advocating for youth-friendly services in Kilifi county. However, the county has been silent on the CIPFP,” he added.

Geoffrey Odhiambo from  Pwani youth network wants health stakeholders to come to the table and negotiate on how young people can access reproductive health information.

He adds that most young people face a challenge of accessing reproductive health data.

Most young people do not have access to health data.

Odhiambo asked young people to come out and talk about the realities and the challenges they undergo.
