Fifteen people perished on Sunday evening while three others sustained serious injuries after a Mombasa bound Matatu collided with a lorry at Shauri moyo along the Mombasa Malindi highway.
According to Kilifi county medical superintendent Eddy Nzomo, thirteen died on the spot while three succumbed to injuries while undergoing treatment at the Kilifi county hospital.
Coast Regional Police Commander Rashid Yakub also confirmed the accident.
The deceased were eight men, six women and a child.
The injured were referred to Coast general hospital in Mombasa.
The scene of the accident which is near the Mombasa cement clinker plant at Shauri moyo is a notorious black spot that has claimed many lives.
Drivers and locals believe the area is infested with vampires that confuse drivers before tragic accidents. Some claim to see a cow crossing and when they try to avoid hitting the cow the vehicle rolls.
