At least ten General Service Unit (GSU) officers were killed on Saturday evening after their vehicle run over an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) in Garissa County.
According to Inspector General of Police Hilary Mutyambai, the officers were on patrol along the Damajale Harehare road near the Kenya-Somalia border when the incident occurred.
The IED is suspected to have been planted on the road by Al Shabaab militants.
“We lost some officers and the vehicle they were travelling on was severely damaged. Reinforcement has been sent to the area to pursue the attackers and investigations launched,” the police boss said.
Mutyambai said a joint patrol of Kenya Defence Forces, Administration Police, Rapid Response Police Unit and Kenya Police Service had been dispatched to the area to pursue the attackers.
